What is ETF creation/redemption?
It's the process where large institutions swap baskets of securities for ETF shares (and vice versa), helping keep price close to NAV.
February 17, 2026
Creation/redemption is the mechanism that helps ETFs trade efficiently. Authorized participants can create new ETF shares by delivering a basket of securities to the ETF, or redeem ETF shares to receive a basket of securities.
Because this happens in large blocks, it enables arbitrage when ETF prices drift away from the value of the holdings. That's one reason ETF premiums/discounts are often small in normal markets.
For investors, the takeaway is that creation/redemption helps support liquidity and price alignment. In stressed markets, especially for less liquid holdings, the mechanism can still function but premiums/discounts and spreads can widen.
