What is an international ETF?
An international ETF invests in non-domestic markets, such as developed ex-U.S. or emerging markets.
February 17, 2026
International ETFs provide exposure to stocks or bonds outside your home country. They can target developed markets, emerging markets, or specific regions like Europe or Asia.
International exposure can diversify a portfolio, but it adds currency risk and different economic and political risks. Performance can differ widely from domestic markets over long periods.
When choosing an international ETF, check the region and country weights, whether it includes emerging markets, and whether the ETF is currency-hedged. Those choices can meaningfully change risk and returns.
