What is an ETF's total return?

Total return includes both price changes and reinvested distributions, giving the full performance picture.

February 17, 2026

An ETF's price return captures only changes in the share price. Total return includes price changes plus distributions (dividends/interest), assuming they're reinvested.

For comparing ETFs, total return is usually the more meaningful metric because it reflects what an investor actually earns when income is considered.

If you're evaluating income-focused ETFs, total return can be especially helpful. A fund can have a high distribution rate but poor total return if the share price steadily declines.
