What is an ETF's dividend yield?
It's the ETF's distributions over a period relative to its price, but the calculation method (SEC yield vs trailing yield) matters.
February 17, 2026
An ETF's dividend yield is a measure of how much income it distributes relative to its share price. You'll see different yield figures depending on the method used, such as trailing 12-month yield or SEC yield (common for bond funds).
Yields can change over time as portfolio holdings and payout rates change, and price changes also affect the yield percentage.
When comparing ETFs for income, don't rely on a single yield number. Check distribution history, what's driving the income (dividends vs interest), and whether the fund is taking extra risk to produce a higher yield.
