What is a thematic ETF?
A thematic ETF targets a specific trend or theme (like AI, clean energy, or robotics), often with higher concentration risk.
February 17, 2026
Thematic ETFs invest around a narrative or trend, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, clean energy, or genomics. They're designed to package a theme into a single tradable product.
The trade-off is that themes can be loosely defined. Holdings may not all be pure plays, and the portfolio can be concentrated or overlap heavily with growth/tech exposures.
If you're considering a thematic ETF, treat it like a satellite position: check concentration, valuation sensitivity, and how it performed in downturns. Themes can be exciting, but they can also be cyclical and volatile.
