How do I sell an ETF?
Sell it through your broker like a stock, and be mindful of taxes and spreads.
February 17, 2026
Selling an ETF is usually straightforward: you place a sell order through your broker using the ETF's ticker, just like you would for a stock.
Order type matters. A market sell can execute quickly but may get a worse price if spreads are wide. A limit sell lets you set the minimum price you'll accept.
In a taxable account, selling can trigger capital gains or losses. If you're tax-sensitive, consider holding period (short vs long-term) and whether you're selling for rebalancing or because your view of the exposure changed.
