Can ETFs be traded throughout the day?

Yes. ETFs trade intraday on exchanges like stocks.

February 17, 2026

ETFs trade on stock exchanges throughout the trading session, so you can buy and sell them at market prices any time the market is open. That's one of the main differences between ETFs and traditional mutual funds, which typically transact once per day at NAV. (finra.org)

Because ETFs trade intraday, you'll see a bid/ask spread and you can choose order types like limit, stop, and market orders. In very liquid ETFs the spread can be tiny, but in smaller ETFs it can be meaningful.

A practical habit: if an ETF's spread looks wide, consider trading when the market is most active (often mid-morning in the U.S.) and using limit orders. It can make a noticeable difference in execution quality.
