Can ETFs be day traded?

Yes. ETFs trade intraday and can be day traded like stocks, but frequent trading adds risk and costs.

February 17, 2026

Because ETFs trade on exchanges throughout the day, you can day trade them just like stocks. Traders often use liquid ETFs to get exposure to broad markets or sectors without picking individual names. (finra.org)

Day trading comes with its own issues: spreads, slippage, taxes, and behavioral mistakes from overtrading. If you're in the U.S., pattern day trader rules may also apply depending on your account and activity. (finra.org)

If you're choosing ETFs for day trading, liquidity matters. Look for tight spreads and high volume, and understand what drives intraday moves, especially for ETFs linked to markets with different trading hours.
