Are ETFs safer than stocks?

Often “less risky than a single stock” because of diversification, but not always safer than stocks as a whole.

February 17, 2026

If you compare:

One stock vs a broad stock ETF (like a total market ETF), the ETF is usually less risky because it’s diversified across many companies.

But an ETF can still be 100% stocks, so it can drop a lot in a market selloff.

Also, some ETFs are more volatile than many individual stocks (think leveraged ETFs, narrow sector ETFs, or concentrated themes). So “safer” depends on what the ETF holds and how it’s designed.

A good way to frame it: ETFs can reduce company-specific risk, but they don’t remove market risk.
