Are ETFs risky?

They can be. Risk depends on what the ETF holds and whether it uses leverage or concentration.

February 17, 2026

ETFs can be low risk or high risk depending on their holdings. A short-term Treasury ETF is very different from a concentrated biotech ETF.

Risk also comes from design. Leveraged and inverse ETFs can amplify daily moves and behave unexpectedly over long holding periods.

To gauge risk, look at the asset class, concentration (top holdings), historical volatility, and how the ETF performed in market drawdowns. The ETF wrapper is familiar, but the exposure inside is what drives outcomes.
