An ETF can hold equities, but “ETF” itself isn’t a synonym for “equity.”
ETFs are wrappers that can contain many asset types: stocks (equities), bonds, commodities exposures, or mixes of assets.
So:
An equity ETF (like a total market or S&P 500 ETF) is an ETF whose holdings are mostly stocks.
A bond ETF holds fixed income securities.
Other ETFs might target sectors, factors, or specific strategies.
If you see “equity” in a fund name or category, it’s describing the underlying holdings, not the trading vehicle.
A good habit: when evaluating an ETF, focus first on the asset class and exposures in the holdings. The label “ETF” mostly tells you how it trades and how the fund is packaged.
