Are ETF dividends qualified?

Some are. It depends on the underlying holdings and tax rules; bond ETF income is typically ordinary.

February 17, 2026

Whether an ETF's dividends are "qualified" depends on the underlying holdings and whether certain IRS holding-period and eligibility rules are met. Many U.S. equity ETF dividends can be qualified, but not all.

Bond ETF distributions are typically interest income and are usually taxed as ordinary income. Some specialized ETFs (like municipal bond ETFs) can have different tax treatment.

If taxes matter, rely on the ETF's year-end tax reporting (like 1099-DIV in the U.S.) rather than assumptions. Two ETFs with similar yields can have very different after-tax results.
